Situation is starting to feel like the Biden markets.

I thought shock collars were kind of normal (at least for training, disobedient dogs). Why is this particular case interesting? Have shock collars been frowned upon for a long time?

@Mad2live I mean, it's cruel. Plenty of people beat their kids too and yet I think it's abhorrent and if a streamer did that on camera they'd probably be kicked off the platform.

@bens Good example. (excuse my ignorance) is it possible that Hasan was using a very low voltage collar? something that would be the equivalent of a tap on the butt. I am ill informed about the character of the streamer but I just think people generally love their dogs and would not do anything to hurt them. Nevertheless thanks for the reply.

@Mad2live it’s more the fact he’s obviously doing it yet lying about not doing it (outside of if he should or not!)

@Mad2live Were I live it's illegal to use them on dogs. But even if you'd use them, you should have a good reason. Forcing a dog to stay in place for 5-8 hours is not a good reason to use a shock collar.

@Mad2live Shock collars are mildly frowned on I think, but I don't think the reason is just that people love dogs. The real reason this is notable is that many people strongly dislike Hasan and want to shine the brightest light possible on any of his wrongdoings, real or perceived. (Related: It's possible for witch hunts to actually catch witches every now and again, which is not a good enough reason to do witch hunts.)

@Mad2live Beyond just the use of a shock collar another reason people find this case particularly interesting/upsetting is because of the reason he shocks the dog. It seems like he shocks the dog just because it wanted to get up and walk around, not because it was actually misbehaving. There's another clip circulating where he appears to shock the dog because it's slightly out of frame, basically treating it like a prop for his stream which feels particularly cruel.

@Alfie interesting, that use case does seem pretty bad and it matches with my prior mental model of why people would be upset. Vs a “simple” shock collar. Very interesting nonetheless

Quick question: why is anyone betting yes? It doesn’t matter whether or not he did it, he has to admit to doing it.

Avoid, gaslight, lie, etc. > admit wrongdoing that you’ve already lied substantially about

(For someone like Hasan)

@DavidHiggs Internet personalities love their apology videos, I could totally see him backtracking to where he technically admits it but makes up some excuse / justification. Not super likely but definitely >10% likely, maybe ~20%

Here's one of the pictures showing Hasan taped over the prongs and used a shock collar:

@NathanScott wow.... the plot thickens! I was actually tempted to believe he was using a vibration collar, but this seems... pretty clear?

@NathanScott this changes my mind. Seems to definitely be originally a shock collar that may have been taped up either before or after the widely circulated clip.

I'm too lazy to make sure those images are accurate since streamer fanbases/haters will go to great lengths to fabricate that stuff, but i'll just trust someone on here would have pointed that out already if they were fake.

@NathanScott did he snap off / screw off / retract the prongs somehow? everything seems to match but the lack of prongs 🤔

@TheAllMemeingEye He removed the prongs before he showed it on stream yeah. QT saw it after Hasan showed it. I suppose it's possible Hasan bought the more expensive shock collar version and then removed the prongs and only ever used the vibrate function, but he could have just bought the vibrating one.

And when he's showing it on stream, he's trying to hide it with his hands. He's holding it like a magician holds a playing card or something, intentionally showing certain angles and hiding parts of it.

@ItsMe Is this a comment on gossip / tabloid content, or do you really believe the story isn't true? I don't know whether he shocked his dog or not, but it has been proven that the collar he used is a shock collar. It's not an important story, but the gaslighting his community enganges in is crazy.

@redcat I don't know if it's true; I don't really follow any streamers. I just saw the story trending on social media and it felt a lot like celebrity gossip.

@ItsMe Of course it is, you're right. It isn't very relevant. But the story is likely true and the fact that he and his community (not you obviously) try to frame this as a zionist campaign against him really rubs me the wrong way.

@ItsMe celebrity gossip is a canvas to discuss interpersonal conflict, the morality of certain actions, and character judgment amongst peers without the danger of using peer conflicts as examples. It's basically applied philosophy.

@cthor

gossip good gossip bad gossip good

bc fun bc irrelevant bc philosophy

Since he provided evidence he didn't shock his dog (even though shock collars are extremely common) then there's nothing to admit to? Why not make a market about evidence comes out that he did shock his dog rather than him admitting it?

@Samaritan People have found the exact model of shock collar he showed on stream. He put black electric tape over the prongs when he showed it on stream and claimed it only vibrated.

@Samaritan It has been proven beyond doubt that the model he used is a shock collar. Whether he really shocked the dog or not is another matter.

@redcat I mean it's hard to believe he would affix a shock collar to his dog and not shock it?

@bens Yes, it's hard to believe and I do believe that he did it. Edit: Although tbf it's supposedly a multifunctional collar that can also vibrate.

It just can't be proven that he shocked the dog. But even without the collar he treats his dog like a prop.
