We’re talking about the global box office, and going off BoxOfficeMojo.
The films and their totals (as of Feb 16th, 2024):
Moana (2016) - $687M
Moana 2 (2024) - $0
Moana: Live Action (2025) - $0
This market will resolve once the initial box office runs have completed for all three films. Once Moana 2 / Live Action Moana are released on Disney+, this counts as the completion of their initial box office run.
If a film has a repeat box office before / concurrent with another film’s initial box office run, the additional money will count towards its total. Practically speaking, Disney may release Moana in theaters two more times before Live Action Moana has left the theaters, or is on Disney+, all of that money counts here.
@Ziddletwix we’ll have to play it by ear. If the film keeps getting pushed back forever, this will unfortunately get pushed back as well. (For non-Ziddle readers), that happens occasionally with big studio movies, they get stuck in development hell and get pushed back years; New Mutants took 5 years to flop like a dead fish.
If it’s completely pulled off the release schedule, or otherwise canned by Disney, I will disqualify it. But it’ll have to be quite clear that movie is no longer happening.
